Meet February’s Chin Cactus

Meet February’s Chin Cactus

Happy Valentines Cacti Lovers!

Fast asleep, chilling in this month’s box is the cheeky chin cactus (Gymnocalycium damsii). He comes in a gorgeous green ceramic pot, one that may make other cacti green with envy!

This cheeky chap comes all the way from South America, where he and his friends can be found sunbathing beside low bushes which allow just enough light for him to grow. He can reach a maximum height of 10cm making him the perfect pal to have on your windowsill, bookcase or desk. His friends nickname him the Chin Cactus because of his chin-like bumps. He has skin that is covered in areoles where small spines can grow which is what makes him a cactus.

Greens Galore

It wouldn’t be a Barry’s Cactus Club box without a surprise - this month you’ll be getting *drumroll*….

Microgreens!

Microgreens are sachets of green seed goodness that are perfect for the growers and gardeners limited to a windowsill, and anyone who likes a little sass to their salads and sandwiches.

From planting to sprouting, these speedy little stems can grow in as little as three weeks and be ready to harvest. Microgreens are super easy to take care of, just use a mister to mist once or twice a day and keep the soil moist. Keep and eye out for the first set of true leaves, grab your scissors and then snip just above the soil line.

What to do with microgreens?

These crunchy shoots really do pack a punch! They are crammed full of the good stuff .. potassium, iron, zinc, magnesium, copper… all nutrients that help support a healthy functioning body. Here are a couple of ideas on what to do with microgreens:

  • Eat raw as a little snack.

  • Popular for juicing - start the day with a nutrient hit.

  • Garnish practically any dish - omelettes, pasta, pizza, curries, stir fries.

  • Know a fussy eater? Sneak them into soups and sandwiches .

With signs of spring starting to emerge, don’t be tempted to water your cacti collection just yet. For a reminder on the cactus sleepy season and winter dormancy, make sure you read up on October’s blog post.
