Caring For Your Cactus During The Growing Season

The sun is shining, the birds are singing and it’s time to start waking up your Barry’s Cactus Club cacti collection after their winter dormancy period! Yay!

Here’s a little guide to keeping your prickly pals happy during the growing season from March to September.

Water

Less is more. Let the soil completely dry out and then, give him a big old drink. Our top tip is to water from the bottom by pouring water into your ceramic pot and letting it sit there for a few minutes. Remember to drain extra water afterwards as cacti hate having wet feet and may get root rot. Start by watering from around every 4 weeks in early spring and then weekly in mid summer when it’s really hot!

Location, location, location

A sunny windowsill is an ideal home for your prickly pals. Your cacti love warm spaces with lots of light and prefer temperatures of 15 - 25 degrees. As most cacti in the wild grow in dry deserts, it's important to keep them away from humid spaces like the bathroom.

Feeding time

It’s the growing season (March - September) which means it's time to feed your cacti family. Always feed cactus with food suitable for cacti. Help your cactus grow big and strong with Barry’s Cactus food! Add sparingly, using only a couple of drops with every four waters.

Feeding will encourage your plants to flower. Check out January’s blog to find out more about the Cactus food extra that featured in January’s Barry’s box.
