Barry’s January Cactus - The Flaming Crown Cactus

Barry’s January Cactus - The Flaming Crown Cactus

Whether you are a seasoned plant collector or are turning over a new leaf, Barry’s Cactus Club has you covered. We are turning up the heat for 2022 because this month you will be getting your hands on a Flame Crown Cactus! (Rebutia fiebrigii).

A flame crown cactus I hear you ask? His regal name refers to his distinctively orange daisy-like flowers which grow prolifically in clusters, forming a crown. This fiery fellow comes all the way from Bolivia, South America where the climate is warm and humid all year round. His kingdom is none other than the Andes Mountain range, where he can be found at over 2000 meters above sea level.

Growing up, he starts life as a solitary ball covered in small lumps and silky furry hairs. Over time these balls multiply to form mounds.

Food glorious food

Barry has prepared a feast of sorts for your prickly friends to start the new year! A hearty treat of cactus food. This fantastic supplement should be fed to your cactus from early spring and just before the growing season. But like anything, a treat should be given sparingly as these prickly pals only have a small appetite. Full instructions on how to use it are at the side of the bottle.

This prince needs beauty sleep

Winter dormancy continues on until the end of February. This means that your prickly friends won’t need watering or feeding during the colder months. To find out more about how to look after your cacti during the winter siesta, check out October’s Barry’s blog.
